A Ringing World: Music for Bells and Gongs (2009)
for percussion solo

Ringing I (a distant drone)
Ringing II (a frenzied dance)
Ringing III (a fractured folksong)
Ringing IV (a celestial melody)

Any of the four pieces can be performed individually.

Program note:

A Ringing World explores the evocative and magical world of metal percussion. Gongs, metal bars, bells, and found objects are used to suggest an ancient and otherworldly folk music, a dreamy and distant music far removed from the modern world. In each of the four pieces, a slowly unfolding process draws the listener inside the sound, so that attention becomes focused on the rich and resonant qualities of the metal instruments themselves. Each piece in A Ringing World has its own character: in the first piece, a soft drone of oscillating gongs and cowbells; the second, a frantic dance to ward off the night spirits; the third, a fractured folk song that approaches and recedes in space; and the celestial blur of high bells in the last.
